Discipline, Opportunity, and Showers.

I often rely on big moments and important opportunities to grow in certain areas. Different relationships and work opportunities help me develop skills like discipline, self-motivation, humility, and so on.

But recently, I’ve started thinking about ways to build and develop those same virtues in my daily life, rather than waiting for large moments and opportunities to force me into them.

For instance, I have struggled with my own personal discipline for years. It’s challenging to get myself to do things I know I need to be doing, especially when it’s not fun or interesting, and I don’t want to. So I’ve tried to put myself in positions that force me to be more disciplined, sometimes by the rigor of the position or the expectations put on me.

But recently, I’ve started to challenge my self-discipline in a new way very regularly.

Showers.

One of my favorite things is to sit in a nice, warm shower and let the hot water run over me. It’s relaxing and it helps me to calm down before I get ready for bed most days. But recently, because of the heat, I’ve started to take cold showers to lower my external body temperature before I get in bed.

I don’t have air conditioning in my apartment, so as the temperatures outside Portland climb into the 100s, I’ve had to…
